Purpose/objective:
The Community Engagement Specialist's primary role is to function as a Site Lead responsible for working collaboratively with the Mobile Education Engagement Team (MEET) to service students and families in targeted school neighborhood communities. The main goals are: 1) Increasing attendance and retention rates 2) Increasing parent and student engagement in school communities and 3) Improving the quality of school choice and enrollment information.
Site Leads will oversee the set up of MEET stations throughout school neighborhoods that are designed to inform parents and guardians of their options regarding school choice and enrollment as well as to provide information about resources and services within the community.
Location:
Roughly 20% of the Community Engagement Specialists' time will be spent in targeted neighborhood schools in the City of Denver/Denver Public Schools Collaborative. These schools neighborhoods surround North High School, East High School, West High School, Cole Arts and Sciences Academy, TreVista at Horace Mann, Place Bridge Academy, Stedman Elementary, and Smith Renaissance School of the Arts. The other 80% of time will be spent working in-the-field of school neighborhoods overseeing and coordinating MEET sites.
Key responsibilities:
AmeriCorps Community Engagement Specialist will be central to supporting district-wide initiatives and goals while strengthening linkages among community-based organizations, businesses, parents, and schools. Reporting to the AmeriCorps Program Manager, members will work in collaboration with Mobile Education Engagement Teams (MEET), Resource Advocates and other relevant individuals/groups to achieve measurable outcomes and goals. AmeriCorps Community Engagement Specialists will:
Work in conjunction with the Program Manager to oversee MEET stations throughout various school neighborhood communities - parks, government buildings, shopping centers, grocery stores and high traffic areas
* Assist in coordinating and scheduling MEET activities including phone calls to students/families; track calls in Infinite Campus (IC) and Program Database
* Assist with cataloging students who have displayed problems with attendance and forward info to feeder schools at the end of each academic year
* Serve as liaison between school social workers and MEET members to facilitate the process of conducting home visits; track visits in IC and Program Database
* Update student/family contact info using Infinite Campus
* Maintain directory of community resources and facilitate ease of access to information/programs/services for student/families; track referrals in IC and Program Database
* Refer parents to appropriate school staff and inform parents how to volunteer in schools
* Assist with coordinating MEET schedules to conduct door knocks and/or call families to remind parents of school events (back to school nights, parent teacher conferences, school activities)
* Assist with coordinating MEET schedules to conduct on-site and in-the-field training sessions to teach parents how to access and utilize Infinite Campus; track the number of parents trained in IC and Program Database
* Inform parents of Parent Leader meetings and CSE, PLS and SLT meetings; track in IC and Program Database
* Participate in providing Census information to students/families to increase Denver's 2010 Census count; participate in scheduled activities such as door knocks and phone calls in selected Denver communities
* Provide parents with information regarding the neighborhood school, as well as other DPS schools of interests so parents may make an informed decision regarding school choice (ie. curriculum, after-school programming, tutoring, mentoring, enrollment deadlines, etc.)
* Inform parents regarding school partnerships in the surrounding school communities such as support from local business merchants, faith based organizations, non profits and youth services agencies that serve the school
* Assist with coordinating MEET schedules to enroll students and parents in 6th and 9th grade academies; and follow-up with door knocks and phone calls to support an increase in participation and attendance in targeted neighborhood communities
* Work collaboratively with Resource Advocates to identify community needs
* Participate in weekly strategic planning sessions and focus groups discussions
* Attend staff meetings with the AmeriCorps Program Manager to disseminate information central to supporting and strengthening linkages among community organizations and schools
* Participate in professional development opportunities and attend training sessions
* Work collaboratively with Resource Advocates to collect data and information essential to supporting a Program Evaluation
* Be available to work some weekend and evening shifts
Qualifications:
* Experience in relevant fields (youth services, education, social work, counseling, child and family advocacy, community organizing, etc.) working with urban youth
* Experience in coalition-building essential
* Highly organized individual with the ability to multitask, follow-through and complete assigned duties accurately
* Data management experience essential (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.)
* Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
* Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends, as needed
* Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances
* Ability to work with diverse groups of people in a team environment
* Bilingual ability in English and Spanish desirable
Training/support provided:
* Approximately 60-90 minutes per week of comprehensive training will be provided for the Community Engagement Specialists. These trainings will cover a variety of topics and will be delivered by a team that includes Denver Public School teachers
* Adequate mobile technology will be provided for AmeriCorps members to be as equipped as possible for operating MEET stations in school communities

* Monthly stipend of $1,000.00 for a period of one year
* Upon successful completion of 1,700 hours over the full term of service, Community Engagement Specialists will also receive an Education Award of $4,725
