Fire Safety Specialist
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is a bi-state public agency operating some of the busiest and most important transportation links in the New York / New Jersey region including The Port Authority Trans Hudson Corporation (PATH), the primary transit link between Manhattan and New Jersey communities and suburban commuter railroads.
We currently have an opening for a Construction Safety Specialist.
This is a long-term project position and will be located at the World Trade Center site.
Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor, WTC Fire and Safety, the selected candidate will perform responsible technical duties essential to eliminating hazardous practices and conditions, and ensuring fire and safety programs and standards are properly adhered with.
The Construction Safety Specialist will be responsible for:
-ensuring OSHA, FDNY and NYCDOB specified or accepted safety procedures are followed by construction contractors;
-evaluating from a safety engineering viewpoint the overall conduct, effectiveness and efficiency of Port Authority construction safety programs and reporting findings and recommendations to the WTC Site Safety Director;
-conducting fire safety training
-investigating construction accidents; determining causes and making recommendations to prevent recurrences; providing professional and technical advice and assistance to other departments on problems relating to accident prevention;
-fire loss prevention; planning, studying, analyzing and reporting on assigned projects and works with representatives of Port Authority units, Port Authority tenants, and external agencies;
-interacting with Port Authority insurance brokers and underwriters loss control representatives.

-High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
-Three to five years experience in the construction and fire and safety arena ' conducting investigations and accident prevention. Previous experience and/or training in fire code inspection and enforcement.
The ideal candidate will present the following qualifications profile:
-Some college credits with courses in Construction Management, Fire Protection, Fire Safety, etc.
-Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA Federal Regulations and Safety Programs.
- Familiarity with National Fire Codes; New York City Fire Code; Rules of the City of New York; FDNY operations and procedures.
-Demonstrated ability to analyze accident reports and conduct investigations to determine causes.
-Demonstrated ability to communicate with FDNY, construction inspectors, construction management and safety personnel and to work effectively with contractors.
-Demonstrated ability to effectively evaluate fire protection programs and to make technical recommendations based upon findings.
-Must be able to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
-Must be able to work overtime and be available on-call.
-Ability to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
-Excellent oral and written communication skills.
