Position Title: Grader
Reports to: Planer Supervisor
Department:Planer
Hours per shift: Employee works 10-hour shifts, with three 10-minute breaks, and 45-minute lunch.
Day: 5:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Swing: 5:00 P.M. to 3:30 A.M.
Wage: Level 5 ($ 18.02/hr)
Position Purpose: This position will rotate between grader and landing table (refer to landing table job description for details on that position). Grader will maximize grade with the least amount of trim possible while maintaining safety and quality. The worker in this position will be standing or sitting for long period of time. This position will need to keep up with the pace of the planer, while maintaining safety and quality standards as outlined in the Job Hazard Analysis, Standard Operating Procedures, and other requirements as directed by the supervisor for the safe and efficient operation of the planer. The grader is also responsible for keeping the belts at the correct speeds to maximize efficiency and keep the sorter chains speeds at speeds that reduce the chain tensions but also allow the planer to run at the highest capacity.
Essential Functions: Grader(1)Correctly grade lumber to the maximize value with as little trim as possible. (2)Give feedback to planerman regarding surfacing deficiencies.(3) Check the high grader system to ensure there are not spikes in sizes or grades that are abnormal. (4) Set sorter to designated speed per product and product length. (5) Set belt speeds to match planer speed and sorter speed. (6) Make sure grade stamps are working properly. (7) Fix cross ups and any jams up on the planer landing table or sorter as quickly as possible. (8) Clean up when the planer is down and you are not assisting with trouble shooting or fixing the issue. (9) Keep area clean
Non-Essential Functions: Grader(1)The worker may be responsible for cleanup activity during down times, changeovers, or between shifts. This activity will consist of removing debris from the work area using a broom, rake, or shovel. (2)The worker may be required to rotate to different positions for cross-training purposes or to facilitate production. Job duties for other positions are outlined in their individual Job Descriptions.(3)Assist co-workers or Maintenance personnel in basic maintenance procedures.
Working Environment: (1)Environmental exposure- Inside 98% of the time: average temperature 65 degrees, high 100 degrees, and low 40 degrees. Outside 2% of the time: average temperature 65 degrees, high 100 degrees, and low 30 degrees.(2)Noise or Vibration- Planer and other machine noises, forklift noise and similar heavy equipment found in the mill, but not adjacent to this workstation. (3)Atmospheric conditions- Fumes: none, Dust: present, Mist: water, Odors: Gasses: none, Poor ventilation: none.
Personal Protective Equipment Required: Grader(1)Eye Protection (when tending bins).(2)Hearing Protection. (4)Approved Footwear.

Skills: Must be certified by WWPA or WCLIB or PLIB with the understanding that they will become WWPA certified. Must successfully complete structured job training and testing to become a certified Glendale Sawmill Grader. Use vision/hearing continuously. Reading and speech required to communicate comprehension of Job Hazard Analysis, machine specific lockout proceed. Must be self directed in identifying and efficiently completing each task.
