Paper Machine Superintendent (Optimizer) – Toledo, OR Responsibilities: The Paper Machine Superintendent (Optimizer) will have responsibility over one paper machine including the safety of the equipment and employees, product quality and the efficient production of linerboard / corrugating medium. The successful candidate will: Promote the Georgia Pacific Environmental, Health and Safety goals by: Establishing programs to ensure that employees are trained to perform their jobs safely. Ensuring employees’ performances are monitored daily with emphasis on elimination of unsafe acts. Setting and achieving high standards of housekeeping. Facilitating development plans (training programs) for all employees in area of responsibility. Maintaining effective working relationships with unions and different levels in all departments of the organization. Leading and instilling a strong safety culture amongst operators. Provide leadership to meet/exceed key operation targets in safety, quality, reliability, production and cost. Investigate, recommend, and implement new equipment Process changes and/or modifications that will improve operations, productivity, quality, and reduce costs. Monitor controllable costs for paper machine operating and maintenance expenses and take corrective action as necessary. Lead efforts to promote operator equipment ownership through operator essential care program Facilitate planning and organization for proper maintenance and upkeep of paper machine. Set and maintain high standards of quality to ensure customer satisfaction. Maintain harmonious relations with employees by accurately administering contract provisions and company policies. Use root cause failure analysis and critical thinking skills to effectively troubleshoot complex papermaking process issues. Lead or be a member of teams for continuous improvement efforts. Keep abreast of new technology in the competitive environment. Develop vendor and supplier relationships to successfully manage our business through cost control and benchmarking. Keep necessary departmental records and reports; follow up on all significant problems. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Pulp and Paper Science or Engineering related field. Minimum of 7 years of mill production supervisory experience OR any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Minimum 3 years experience working with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel, and database programs. Possess ambulatory capabilities to move freely about the mill, ascend and descend ladders, and tolerate temperature extremes. Be available 24 hours by way of home or cellular phone when on-call. Work beyond normal work schedule as necessary to fulfill position responsibilities; work weekends as scheduled. Knowledge – Skills – Abilities: Excellent leadership, management, interpersonal, problem solving and decision making skills. Strong communication, planning, organization, and visionary skills. Strong computer skills with emphasis on Excel, functional databases and data analysis. Be able to work in a team-based environment.
