Opportunity
The DOE Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA has an exciting research opportunity available. Under general supervision, will serve as a Research Associate or Sr. Research Associate and perform library construction tasks for various sequencing platforms according to standard operating procedures (SOP's). Will be responsible for performing research assignments and analysis relative to library construction and clone management tasks necessary to meet the goals of the large-scale DNA sequencing effort. Tasks involve purification and modification of DNA, transformation, PCR, and database tracking. Emphasis will be placed on meeting the library production goals as well as conducting R&D experiments to improve library quality and cloning efficiency in support of production sequencing. Required to assemble, analyze and report data and propose future experiments. Position will report to the Cloning Technology Supervisor.
The selected candidate will be hired at the Research Associate or Sr. Research Associate level depending upon the candidate's level of experience and qualifications.
Specific Job Duties
- Follow SOP's to create a variety of libraries for 454, Illumina and other upcoming third generation platforms from prokaryote, eukaryote organisms, and environmental samples.
- Create cDNA, Ribosomal panels, pyrotags and MDA (Multiple Displacement Amplification) and normalization libraries.
- Perform library QC using PCR, gel electrophoresis, and/or quantitative PCR.
- Assist in the creation of various cloning vectors for both small and large insert libraries.
- Independently design and perform experiments to understand general library development issues relating to production needs and problems.
- Identify areas of improvement and efficiency and offer feedback.
- Troubleshoot & optimize current library construction protocols to meet scientific research goals.
- Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook; observe and document any deviations from established protocols.
- Update and maintain laboratory protocols.
Essential duties for Sr. Research Associate -
In addition to the job duties described above, the Sr. Research Associate will:
- Operate at a higher level of independence and responsibility when carrying out assignments.
- Serve as a technical resource to other members in the group and recommend process and database improvements.
- Assist in project coordination, mentoring RA's and students and troubleshooting advanced library construction projects.
Key Success Factors
Essential-
- BA/BS in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or related field or equivalent experience preferred.
- Experience with basic laboratory and molecular biology techniques including DNA cloning, DNA purification, DNA modification, and electrophoresis.
- Good understanding of how scientific principles apply to problem being studies.
- Experience troubleshooting basic problems, conducting analysis of data and recording experimental data.
- Good analytical, record-keeping and organizational skills necessary for working in a laboratory environment.
- Effective communication skills to work in a research team environment with a diverse group of scientific and technical personnel.
- Proficient computer skills using PC, Macintosh, and UNIX operating systems.
Marginal-
- Experience in DNA sequencing and analysis.
- Knowledge and experience in constructing libraries for the next generation sequencing platforms (Illumina /454).
- Experience with lab automation and information management.
Essential qualifications for the Sr. Research Associate -
In addition to the qualifications described above, the Sr. Research Associate will have:
- Bachelor's preferred and two to five years of demonstrated lab experience in Biology, Microbiology, Genetics or related field with increasing responsibility, or an MS/Ph.D Degree.
- Demonstrated ability to serve as a technical resource, troubleshoot laboratory process problems and recommend process and database improvements.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring research technicians and students.

This is a full-time career appointment. Incumbent in this position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. Work will be performed at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI), located in Walnut Creek, CA.
