Description: Job Description
The Charge Nurse is a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse who is responsible for the overall delivery of care for a given unit on a specific shift and, in addition to their supervisory duties, provides direct patient care for a group of patients that is generally fewer than the staff nurses patient assignments.
The Charge Nurse coordinates patient assignments and delegates responsibilities to professional and non professional staff members on a given unit in order to assure the completion of safe and comprehensive patient care and is able to promote optimum patient satisfaction. The Charge Nurse is a role model and resource for staff members.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.
Management
1. Oversees their assigned unit and directs the nurses and other employees assigned to the unit
2. Assigns and encourages staff to take breaks, lunches, dinners and to attend designated committee meetings and educational programming
3. Understands, utilizes, and implements the chain of command as necessary
4. Counsels staff and issues oral warnings to staff, as required
5. Accountable for patient care activities and unit events on his/her assigned shift
6. Promotes optimal utilization of supplies and equipment; supports departmental budget by giving direction to others and making suggestions for improvements
7. Promotes and role models a strong teamwork ethic, by demonstrating dependability in maintaining a committed work schedule
8. Assists staff with communication issues that may exist between physicians, interdepartmental team members, consultations, or peers
9. Maintains open communication with Unit Nurse Manager on any major issues, adverse events, risk management issues, and deteriorating patient condition
10. Works with families and responds to questions and possible complaints from families and patients, follows up on unusual incidents
11. Provides backup support for staff as needed with assignments, contacting MD and interdisciplinary team members, and education of staff as needed
12. Attends interdisciplinary patient care rounds
13. Works with staff to coordinate unit activity including admissions, transfers, discharges, meetings and inservices
Supervision
1. Oversees the unit during their shift
2. Assigns staffs overall duties such as medication administration; and assigns and reassigns staff to particular patients, locations, and tasks, as appropriate
3. Using independent clinical judgment, assures appropriate patient assignments for staff according to staff skill-sets, patient care needs, continuity and availability of resources
4. Assists/supervises nursing staff in care management functions such as treatment planning, patient education and discharge planning
5. Participates in daily nurse-to-nurse reports and updates
6. Accountable for assigning code/emergency cart check as directed according to policy
7. Assists unit nurse manager in monitoring compliance with regulatory, organizational, and departmental standards
8. Assumes responsibility for the performance and actions of staff and holds them responsible for same
Education
1. Educates patients, visitors and other health care professionals in the community to the role of the charge nurse and in particular as it relates to the specific programs
2. Participates in program and professional development
3. Encourages individual staff members to seek educational opportunities to further professional growth
4. Actively participates in informal staff education
5. Acts as a resource for complex patientswill see all Qualifications:
