Should You Work For Your Self? Ask Yourself This One Question

Posted by

As a freelance writer, people often ask me if they should take a chance and try to work for themselves. It's a huge risk, and no one can tell you if it is one that would work out for you or fit your needs. In my case, it was more of a thing that I did as a hobby, then as a side project. When the job market got bad, I found myself with the time to invest and nothing left to lose.

For those who already have a job and are thinking about throwing in the towel and venturing out on their own, the stakes are even higher. Giving up the comfort of perceived job security to take a gamble is so risky it borders on insane. However, when you are stuck doing something you don't like and you can't ignore the voice inside yourself that tells you it's time, it can be so worth it.

But how do you know if the time is right?

The short answer is, you don't. However, the best piece of career advice I've ever received about the matter was simply this - pretend that you were just told you had a terminal disease. Then ask yourself this question - What would you do differently?

From there, the choices that make the most sense for you will become much more clear.

What do you think? Have you thought about working for yourself? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
