Attitude Can Determine Your Altitude

You might think that your career progress is determined by your skills and qualifications, but attitude can be an even more important factor. Keeping a positive attitude in the workplace could improve your chance of getting a promotion and generally finding success in your chosen career.

Successful people generally have one thing in common — a positive attitude. By focusing on finding solutions to their problems, rather than getting bogged down in negative thoughts, successful people are able to steer their careers in the direction they want them to go.

Here are six steps that you can take to generate a positive attitude that could help you in the workplace.

1. Cultivate Gratitude

Take some time every day to be grateful about things that have gone well. These can be small things, such as driving to work without meeting any traffic. When you start noticing all the things that go right each day rather than focusing on those that go wrong, you are likely to find your mood improving and your outlook becoming more positive.

2. Adopt Healthy Habits

Taking time each day to do something relaxing can keep your mood positive. Practice yoga or meditation for a few minutes each day to calm your mind. Even just taking a walk during your lunch break can help to clear your head.

3. Exercise

Adding some cardiovascular exercise into your weekly schedule can boost your mood and help you maintain a positive attitude. Jogging, cycling, swimming and playing sports all release endorphins, which are natural chemicals in the body that make you feel happy and relaxed.

4. Eat and Sleep Well

It's hard to keep a positive attitude when you are hungry, dehydrated or tired. Make sure you eat regularly, drink plenty of water and sleep for around eight hours a night.

5. Help Other People

When you share your positive energy with others, it grows and multiplies. Be ready to help out your co-workers when they need assistance. Look into local volunteering opportunities if you want to fill the time you spend outside the workplace with even more rewarding activities.

6. Do What You Love

It is difficult to keep a positive attitude when you are doing something you do not enjoy every day. If you are sticking to the healthy habits listed, but you still do not feel positive about your job, perhaps it is time to consider looking for a new role.

A positive attitude is important for your career progress. When you eat well, sleep well, exercise and practice gratitude, you will not only feel better, you make a more positive impression on other people. This could improve your chance of getting a promotion or finding the job you really want.
