  • What You Will Do

    Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening for a Control Room Operator at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory Pulsed Field Facility. The job involves working with a small team to provide operational support for a multitude of systems including a 1430 MVA generator, and its related subsystems. These systems are all operated at voltages and currents in the range of several tens of kVs and respective kA, with stored energy levels from 1 MJ to beyond 1000 MJ. The systems are used by LANL to power pulsed magnets which are at the forefront of scientific research and push the envelope in terms of technical performance. Successful applicant will work with the Power Team to operate, maintain, and improve these custom systems to support scientific research. The person holding this position is responsible during his/her shift for all personnel and equipment involved in the safe and efficient production of pulsed power. They will lead in the coordination, monitoring and controlling of all operations. They have the responsibility and authority to take whatever action may be necessary to protect people, environment, and equipment.

    Research Technologist 1 ($81,700 - $133,100)

    Responsibilities:

    • Ensures that all site safety and environmental requirements and procedures are followed and takes corrective actions as necessary.

    • Performs all generator and auxiliary operations, including startup, pulsed power generation, and shutdown.

    • Responsible for equipment monitoring, maintaining operational parameters, inspections, routine testing, facility walk-downs, tagging, and troubleshooting.

    • Assists with the planning, direction and performance of housekeeping duties. Ensures housekeeping standards are maintained and initiates corrective actions when necessary.

    • Maintains all relevant administrative documents, generates reports, and keeps records of daily activities and equipment status. Writes, reviews, and revises operating and related procedures.

    • Works with scientific team to develop and implement a planned daily operations schedule

    • Collaborates with engineers and technicians to plan and support routine preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, and improvements on all systems and equipment.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • Minimum 3 Years experience working as an operator in a power plant or equivalent.

    • Basic knowledge of fundamental principles related to physics, mathematics, AC and DC electrical theory, chemistry, water treatment process, thermal dynamics, heat transfer and fluid flow.

    • Ability to comprehend and apply technical information, including mechanical and electrical drawings (such as blueprints, P&IDs, single-line diagrams and schematics) to problem-solving situations and troubleshooting.

    • Knowledge of power plant safety policies and procedures, especially in the areas of high-energy systems, chemical handling, rotating machinery, and confined spaces.

    • Ability to locate, trouble-shoot, and adjust defects in mechanical equipment and/or maintain, install, modify and trouble-shoot plant electrical systems and equipment.

    • Ability to communicate and coordinate work on technical subjects with others internally and with outside vendors.

    • Must be able to work occasional extended hours. Must be able to respond to emergent situations which requires successful applicant find housing with-in an hour of the site and possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.

    Required Education and/or Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

    Desired Qualifications :

    • Demonstrated knowledge, skill, and prior hands-on operational experience relating to electrical systems used in modern power stations, including switchgear and motors, 480-volt motors and control centers, transformers, batteries, inverters and chargers, main generator, and excitation equipment.

    • Demonstrated knowledge regarding operation of valves, switches, controls, keyboards, and other devices associated with power plants.

    • Demonstrated knowledge, skill, and prior hands-on operational experience relating to instrumentation and control systems.

    • Working knowledge of maintenance management systems.

    • Operating and maintenance experience with various analytical and test equipment.

    Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment : Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.     Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.     No Clearance : Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
